This shooting discipline is competitive shooting done with a high power rifle on standardized paper targets at distances from 200 to 1000 yards. Shooting of this type is conducted at matches throughout the year all over the country and culminates with the National Championships held at Camp Perry, Ohio every August.
Our club typically shoots “across the course” consisting of 4 stages;
|
20 rounds slow-fire standing in 20 minutes at 200 yards |
2 "sighter" shots in 2 minutes are allowed in each of the four stages. Line or range commands are given by a match official at each stage to be followed.
This shooting is conducted on the 2 nd and 4 th Sunday morning of each month, starting at 7:00 am (8:00 am during the winter months of December, January, and February) and finishes around noon. In addition to shooting, you will also take your turn in scoring another competitor's target when he/she shoots.
Additionally, NRA approved 1000 yard matches are held whenever there is a 5 th Sunday in a given month. These matches are shot from the prone position only with 30 minutes given for a unlimited number of sighter shots and 20 rounds for record. Additionally, "F" class shooting is allowed where a competitor may utilize the "artificial support" of sandbags, pedestal rest, bipod, etc as opposed to the sling only supported rifle shooting typically used. Entries are accepted from 7:00 to 07:30 am, the morning of the match. Matches usually conclude by 1:00 pm..
Do not be intimidated by the "fancy equipment" you may observe being used by more experienced competitors in this sport. Bare essentials to get started are a usable rifle; M1 Garand, M1A, AR15A2, or a bolt action "match rifle" are optimal. In essence, a center fire rifle with fully adjustable iron sights (scopes are only allowed in the 1000 yard "any rifle-any sights" and F class matches) that has a rapid reload capability (i.e. detachable box magazine or stripper clip ability). Proper ammunition, eye and ear protection are also required.
A spotting scope, leather military style shooting sling, shooting jacket, shooting mat and stool are also helpful. Many starting in this sport utilize a blanket or piece of carpet for a mat and a heavy sweatshirt for a shooting jacket. You will find most high power competitors helpful in loaning you the use of their spotting scope or mat if you do not have one during one of our events.
